On the whole, the concept and themes produced this semester linked
assignment 1, 2 & 3 very well together. Assignment 1 took a more abstract
approach in terms of the overall presentation and the concept of the "fence".
Although abstract the themes were based on a more realistic representation
of images, making it easier to relate the final clip with the concept. I had a
firm idea that I wanted something "dark", "gothic" and "dangerous" so I
approached the first assignment this way, leading to the word/concept of
being "entangled" as well as different themes and concepts, such as nature,
growth, surround, etc, which may also be linked back to the fence.
The second assignment was a continuation from the first hence shared the
same feel. The task was to incorporate an architectural element and connect
the theme to an architectural point of view. I thought all the ideas fitted well
with the image of a Gothic cathedral, in terms of darkness, decay, entanglement,
maze like and so on. It even raised more concepts such as "grandness" and
whether grand architecture can stand the test of time or is it just a thing of the
present? Which hints evolution and adaptation. The "entangle" bit also connected
well with this assignment in being the catalyst for the destruction and decay.
It represented nature like a parasitic vine and raised concepts of nature vs. man.
Is nature greater than man or vice versa?? The music was used to tie everything
together as well as create the rhythm and mood.
The third assignment combined all the previous concepts and took a particular
stance on the approach. It is similar to assignment 2, but has a more developed
storyline. It is an open ended and subjective clip that raises questions and ideas
for the viewer to think about rather than just answering them in the clip. It
takes the viewers on a journey that also relies on their own experiences and
knowledge of things. The animation starts off with the similar "dark", "decay"
feel of a dooms day scenario; however this changes to a more positive stance,
that "life does continue" It ends by saying "the future is what you make it to
be" which can be thought of in terms of the clip as well as a general approach
to life. The general concept of the clip is rebirth however it also contains all
the previous concepts as well as new ones such as serenity, isolation, resistance
etc. The music also helped in terms of the lyrics as well as creating a nice flow
and mood.
All 3 assignments connected well with each other and there is a clear progression
from the fence to the future of the world which may not seem apparent without
having done this assignment. I think the main tool of all 3 of my assignments was
a story behind each one which linked onto the next as well as being based on the
main concept whichever that may be.
